Taverna Harakas
About This Spot
Stepping into Taverna Harakas, nestled just off the lively Plateia Nymphon in Chersonisos, feels like being warmly welcomed into a beloved family home. The pace here is unhurried, a gentle rhythm that invites you to slow down and savor both the setting and the food. The cozy front area hums with quiet conversations, the clinking of glasses, and the faint, familiar scent of woodsmoke from the kitchen where traditional dishes come to life.
This is a place where the culinary heart of Crete beats steadily—a small restaurant where authenticity and care feel more important than showmanship. As you settle into your seat, the atmosphere unfolds through the aroma of herbs and grilling seafood, signaling the care behind every preparation. The menu offers more than just food; it’s a passage through Greek flavors, where dishes like tender grilled octopus or a fragrant moussaka cooked in its own clay pot invite reflection on time-honored cooking traditions.
The experience here is deeply personal—the kind of meal where you might find the chef’s mother in the kitchen, the son and daughter managing the front of house with genuine warmth. It’s a subtle choreography of hospitality that encourages conversation and a genuine connection to place. Portions arrive thoughtfully, sometimes accompanied by a home-poured raki or a lovingly prepared dessert, moments that feel like an unspoken thank you for joining the shared table.
Whether you’re winding down after a day discovering the streets of Chersonisos or simply seeking a genuine taste of Crete, Taverna Harakas offers an honest, heartfelt pause. It’s a quiet celebration of local flavors and familial hospitality, where the joy of food is found not only in the dishes but in the human moments around them.

Taverna next to the square in Old Town, which does great authentic Greek food, in a small restaurant setting. The mixed gyros plate was nice but found the meat to be too salty, to the point where it was a bit uncomfortable to eat after a few bites. The moussaka came in the clay pot it is cooked in and was very tasty. Complimentary raki and desert after our meal. I would book a reservation as the whole square gets really busy on an evening.

I cannot praise this place enough!! This was the best experience of all the restaurants I've been to in Crete. We arrived and ordered our starter and 2 mains quite fast despite it being busy We got the BEST octopus in the area, beautifully made and very tender and with a nice grilled flavor. Then we got our mains: a swordfish and a souvlaki (mixed). sadly my souvlaki was red inside and I asked the waitress to attend to it. She said she was sorry but mentioned that this is sometimes the case with meat and that it is safe to eat. I did not mind this explanation much, I left the red meat piece intact, we enjoyed our time so I wouldn't make a scene. To my delight the waitress brought a completely redone pork souvlaki from the kitchen, with sides and all as an apology, free of charge. What a stellar service that any establishment should be jealous of we felt so well taken care of. Well thank you so much wonderful people we enjoyed all the food and the little complementary dessert so much! All the reviews are totally justified!!

On my last night in Crete, I discovered Taverna Harakas Restaurant and what an absolute gem it is! This family run restaurant offered some of the best customer service I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. With the mother cooking in the kitchen and the son and daughter running front of house, the atmosphere was incredibly warm, welcoming, and genuine. The food was authentic, absolutely delicious, and excellent value for money. I had spent most of my week dining along the shore and hadn’t even been aware of Harakas until now, but this was by far the most authentic and memorable experience of my trip. If you’re visiting Crete, I highly recommend making the trip up here to eat, relax, and enjoy the amazing vibes. A truly special place!

A true culinary gem in Crete – Harakas Taverna is everything you could hope for in a traditional Greek dining experience. The food is absolutely delicious – homemade, flavorful, and prepared with care. Every single dish we ordered was simple yet incredibly tasty, highlighting the beauty of authentic Greek cuisine at its best. The grilled whole fish was cooked to perfection, the Greek salad was fresh and perfectly balanced, and the stuffed vine leaves were simply unmatched. Prices are more than fair – excellent value for money without compromising on quality. What truly makes this place special is the wonderful staff – warm, welcoming, and genuinely caring. The service felt like being hosted by family, full of love and attention to every detail. This is the kind of place that leaves a lasting impression – we’ll definitely be back. Highly recommended!

Warm, family-run taverna with real Greek flavors. The fish is the star—fresh, well-roasted, and simply seasoned. Fair prices, friendly service, and packed with locals (always a good sign)
